As May comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on how the chaos of the month leads into the relaxation that summer brings. The days are longer, the air is warmer (err, maybe not quite yet in the Midwest), and there’s an energy that renews my creativity. This year, the many rainy days of May created quiet evenings to catch up on shows and allowed me to tackle my first big needlepoint project in a while. Memorial Day was especially poignant as many of my extended family members came together to celebrate those that came before us and honor our Great Uncle who was killed in WWII. With all of that in mind, I thought it would be the perfect time to share a round-up of the things that brought entertainment and inspiration this month.
What I’m Stitching
Once Easter passes, I consider all red, white, and blue canvases to be fair game. Patriotic stitching will be in season for Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day, so I went ahead and got started! I first stitched a state mini sock of Missouri by Kathy Schenkel (check out her catalog of mini socks available for order through your LNS). It was a quick stitch and I love that it is finished with a stuffed donkey. I have two more in my stash, one for DC and one for my university, and I can’t wait to stitch them. Next, I stitched the adorable Patriotic Giraffe by Taylor Beach Designs. It is beautifully painted and made for a simple yet satisfying stitch!
While I’ve always kept a small project going, in the background I’ve been working on the I Have a Brilliant Beyond Brilliant Idea canvas by Thorn Alexander. This will be a pillow for my office and I’ve swapped the colors to match a plaid that is elsewhere in the space. I can’t wait to finish stitching it and have it on display!
What I’m Eyeing
I’ve seen a few canvases over the last few weeks that I’ve been adding to my wishlist including:
Patriotic House by Stitch Style Needlepiont - I love the idea of using ribbon to create the bunting on the front!
