Needlepoint Finishing: Framing
You can finish needlepoint in a myriad of ways including as a framed piece. Needlepoint is more than just a hobby—and the finished piece is often a piece of art. Why not show your finished piece by framing it. Not only will this protect all your hard work, but it can also enhance the piece and create a lasting piece of decor. In this post I’ll discuss why framing is important, items to consider when framing needlepoint, and where you can have needlepoint professionally framed.
Why Frame Needlepoint
There are a few different reasons to explore framing for a stitched needlepoint piece, including:
Protection - Framing shields your needlepoint from dust, dirt, moisture, and physical damage. Even in the cleanest home, textiles are prone to discoloration and wear when left exposed. A frame provides a barrier against UV light, bugs, and accidental spills. You can also opt to frame needlepoint without glass if you prefer.
Preservation - Needlepoint is often stitched with wool, silk, or cotton threads and accented with ribbons and beads, which can degrade over time if not properly supported. Stretching and framing the piece helps keep the canvas taut, preventing warping or sagging.
Presentation - A frame gives your needlework a polished, professional finish elevating it into art. You can also leverage the framing, both the mat and frame style, to extend the design of the piece.
